The Collaborative Research Center 418 „Structure and Dynamics of Nanoscopic Inhomogeneities in Condensed Matter“ is a joint venture of Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, and Fraunhofer Institute of Mechanics of Materials, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft since 1996. It is devoted to the understanding and application of the cooperative molecular behaviour and the process kinetics in interfaces of different material systems, with special respect to the mechanisms of phase transformations and structuring on the nanoscale. The coordinators are Prof. Dr. S. Trimper (MLU), Prof. Dr. J. Woltersdorf (MPI), and Prof. Dr. T. Thurn-Albrecht (MLU).

The Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics is involved with three projects:
„Reaction fronts and reaction mechanisms during the formation of rare earth zirconates with pyrochlore structure“, project leaders: Prof. Dr. D. Hesse, Dr. S. Senz
„Reaction kinetics in nanoregions and their influence on the properties of composite systems“, project leader: Prof. Dr. J. Woltersdorf
„Atomic structure of complex configurated metal nanoparticles and of their interfaces in glasses“, project leader: Dr. H. Hofmeister.
